Blemish Removal Blemishes build up on our skin for a number of reasons: as we age, due to years of exposure to the sun, or because of viral infections, and so on. A number of blemishes can be removed for you at April Beauty Clinic Thread Veins can be removed from the face, body and legs (please see Thread Vein Removal section). Spider Naevus has a central dilated blood vessel with fine capillaries radiating out from it. It is treated using a low diathermy current or blend electrolysis. It often disappears immediately, but some will need further treatment. Blood Spots/Campbell de Morgan Spots/Cherry Hemangiomas Milia are tiny, white, hard lumps of sebum and keratin in a duct which has no opening to the skin. Well-established ones have to be pierced by a sterile probe and the contents lifted out, or a low diathermy current is applied which breaks down the fatty tissue and allows it to be dispersed. Milia are often associated with dry skin. Cysts arise when sebum under the skin is blocked by an overgrowth of surface skin cells They vary from the size of a pea to that of an an egg. They may be found on the face, back, scalp and neck, for example, and they may contain pus. Repeat treatments may be required, as cysts can be persisitant. A fine needle is inserted into the cyst for several seconds to fry the fatty tissue. Skin Tags/ Fibromas/ Papillomas/ Fibroepithelial Polyps/ Verruca Filiforms/ Filiform Warts are caused by the excess production of keratin in the skin, which can be a consequence of the aging process or friction. They may be found on the neck, under the bust, and around the armpit, (perhaps where a bra strap or a necklace rubs). Their colour varies, e.g. they could be shiny, white, brown or dusky wine-coloured. They are raised on a stalk (pedunculated). Skin Tags are viral in nature and spread around an individual but do not seem to spread between individuals. They receive a blood and nerve supply from the deeper layers of the skin (i.e. from the dermis). The aim of the treatment is to cut off the blood supply to the growth, so that it withers and dies. This is done by applying short-wave diathermy current to the Skin Tag in several short bursts, which cauterizes the blood supply. It comes off immediately or it darkens a little, hardens and drops off over a period of days. At the second appointment (if needed) any remaining work can be completed. In this way the skin will recover properly and over-treatment will be avoided. The treatment is quite comfortable. The skin may be slightly pink and may take a few weeks to return to its normal colour or there may be virtually no sign of treatment. Seborrhoeic Keratosis /Seborrhoeic Warts/ Basal Cell Papillomas are raised, rough or smooth patches of skin, brown, black, tan or white in colour, and with a stuck on appearance. They are not viral in nature. They can be scattered or in lines. Recent ones are easily removed with diathermy electrolysis, while older ones may have a hard central core and so take a little longer to remove. Viral Warts /Plane / Common /Plantar/Verruca Moles can be reduced in appearance: in colour, in size, and levelled to the surface of the skin using diathermy electrolysis. You may wish to consult your GP before treatment is commenced. The area must be checked throughout life as you would do with any mole, as the mole still exists under the surface of the skin. Age Spots (Lentigo) are caused by an accumulation of yellow pigment (lipofuscin) , which is formed by the aging of collagen cells. Superficial ones are very easily removed by diathermy; a crust forms, which soon drops off, leaving a colour that more closely matches the rest of the skin. (If the pigment is deeper, in the dermis, the age spot may remain and you will be advised that this may be the case). Post Treatment Instructions These instructions are designed to promote healing and to avoid irritation or infection of the treated area. The area may remain red for several hours For 48 hours apply Witch Hazel Gel followed by Apres Cosmetic Cream (aftercare cream). Apply Sterex’s highly active Aloe Vera lotion from day 3 for about a month. This promotes healing under the skin and softens and conditions your skin. Sunblock should be applied over the Aloe Vera in exposed areas. Protect the area from soap, shampoo and hair spray, swimming pool chemicals (and their infection risk) etc. for 24 hours. Do not knock off any crusts present, which seal the skin. They occur between about day 2 and day 14. Consider patting the skin dry with paper tissues to avoid lifting any crusts (towels may be too rough). Please do not apply fake tan until any crusts have dropped off as it may make them more visible. If treatment is carried out on the hands, use washing up gloves and treat your hands as delicate until healing is complete.
