Fibromas Fibromas are fibrous growths. They are caused by the excess production of keratin in the skin, which can be a consequence of the aging process. (Mitosis of the skin cells slows down, so that the skin is only more slowly renewed.) While fibromas are associated with aging, they are also found where the skin may be subject to friction, such as under the bust, armpit, and on the neck (perhaps where a bra strap or a necklace rubs). A “fibroma simplex” is a shiny, white or dusky wine-coloured lump. It can be flat (sessile), or raised on a stalk (a pedunculated fibroma). When several stalked fibromas are present, they are referred to as “skin tags”. All fibromas receive a blood and nerve supply from the deeper layers of the skin (i.e. from the dermis). The aim of the treatment is to cut off the blood supply to the growth, so that it withers and dies. This is done by applying short-wave diathermy current to the fibroma in several short bursts, which cauterize the blood supply. The fibroma turns a little darker in colour, withers, dies and forms a small scab, which drops off over a period of about 4-6-weeks. At the second appointment (if needed) any remaining work can be completed. In this way the skin will recover properly and over-treatment will be avoided. A stalked fibroma is treated by cauterizing the point of attachment with one or two applications of current; the fibroma withers, dies, and drops off. The treatment is quite comfortable. After-Care For the next two to three days bathe the area only in cool water and avoid the use of products on the treated area which might irritate the skin, e.g. soap, cleanser, toner, moisturizer, perfumed products, make-up. The said items may also pose an infection risk. Each time the area is bathed, apply sterex lotion (which is available at the clinic), as this is anti-bacterial and promotes healing of the skin. Continue to apply the sterex lotion and to avoid using moisturizer over the treated area until healing is complete. For further details of the full range of treatments, please phone 01935 873 456. |
